Photo ID is required to vote, but you can get a free voting ID if you need one.
The North Carolina General Assembly passed a law requiring that every voter provide an ID when voting in-person or via mail. For some voters, finding a current photo ID like a driver license can prove challenging.
If you are an eligible voter, the Cabarrus County Board of Elections can provide you with a free voting ID.
Do not accept being turned away at the polls. If you forget your ID, you can still vote. You'll need to bring a valid ID to the Cabarrus County Board of Election before vote counts are finalized at what's called the "vote canvass" that happens after Election Day.
If you have a special circumstance preventing you from having or using a valid photo ID, you can still vote. You'll be given a form asking for your reasons. If it's approved, your vote will count.
In North Carolina, you can vote by mail for any reason—no excuses required. You can request an absentee ballot and track its status online.
You will need two witnesses to sign your mail-in ballot, or a notary's stamp. You will still need to provide valid photo ID to vote by mail, with the same exceptions available to those voting in-person.

A voter receives a provisional ballot when questions arise about:

A provisional ballot also is used when a voter does not or cannot present photo ID when voting in person.
